I used a stick on note to indicate 'start' and 'stop' on the appropriate pages. The blue is for Jay and the yellow is for Joy. It has always been difficult to persuade Jay to stop doing certain books, when he is showing so much enthusiasm. But I think letting him continue on and on with one book until he is tired of it is not working. He gets bored with the book and it takes sometime before he wants to do it again. With the 'start' and 'stop' note, he willingly stop and continue on to other books. (less coaxing from me for him to do pre writing and handwriting practice. And he gets do do a wider variety of exercises in a day.)
As you can see from the photos, they are working on the same book today. Since these are new books, they start on the same page. After today, Jay will most probably go faster and finish the book before his sister. He only gets one page of homework from school every once or two weeks. So he has lots of time to work on the things I prepare for him. Joy, on the other hand, gets at least 2 pages of writing homework. These alone will take almost an hour to finish. She gets fewer work from me, besides flash cards and 'ABA' type games.
Like I said, hopefully this addition to our afterschooling will work in the long term. (I'll direct you to the blog where I found this idea, when I found it again)
