Quality Reading Instructions

I attended a wonderful talk last week on Quality Reading Instructions for children. It was given by professor Maryann Manning of University of Alabama at Birmingham. The talk was intended for kindergarten teachers but my colleagues and I attended it out of curiosity. I am glad I did.
The talk is very informative and useful for me to teach my two kids.
The gist of the talk;
1. What can we achieve through literacy curriculum?
2. How can we accomplish what we are trying to achieve?
3. The four types of reading programs - read aloud, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading.

The speaker explained the different reading programmes and gave demonstrations on how to do shared reading and it's really eye opening for me. Even as an educator, I guess, i've forgotten how little children learn.

I started the read aloud and shared reading right away with my kids. Initially, Joy was not interested. I kept on reading and doing discussions with my boy. Joy was walking here and there, glancing at us once in awhile. By the end of the first book, Joy is sitting nearby and joining us! She even pointed to the pictures when I asked her to identify some of the things in the picture book.
I am so glad that I attended the talk!
